That’s when the double doors opened and Mr. Whitaker, our CEO, walked in with two board members and the Head of Product I’d never officially met. Madison lit up and practically sprinted to shake his hand. “Sir, welcome — Brett and I were just walking the team through the Q3 relaunch strategy we developed.” Mr. Whitaker didn’t smile. He looked past her, straight at the back wall, and said, “Claire. There you are. Sorry I’m late — traffic from the airport was brutal.” The room went dead silent. Madison’s hand was still frozen in midair. Brett’s coffee cup stopped halfway to his mouth. Mr. Whitaker walked past both of them, pulled out the chair at the head of the table, and gestured for me to sit. “Everyone, I want to formally introduce the architect of the Q3 relaunch — and, as of Monday morning, our new Director of Strategy, reporting directly to me. Claire has been quietly running point with the board for the last four months on a confidential brief. The deck you’re about to see is entirely her work.” He turned to Madison, calm and polite. “Madison, I’m curious. Whose name is on the cover of that deck?” She tried to laugh. “Sir, it — it was a team effort, we all —” “It’s a simple question,” he said. “Because I personally emailed that file to Claire at 11 p.m. last night. Only Claire.” Brett was already unclipping his badge before HR even stood up. Madison’s face went the color of printer paper. I walked to the front of the room, picked up the clicker from her shaking hand, and clicked to slide one. My name reappeared on the cover. “Good morning, everyone,” I said. “Let’s start from the top.”
