The chandelier light hit my medals as I positioned myself under the main microphone. Trent laughed into his date’s ear, loud enough. Someone get grandpa off the stage before he tips over. The room chuckled, uneasy, waiting for permission. I tapped the mic twice. Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Colonel Marcus Halden, retired, and I am the anonymous donor behind the Halden Veteran Housing Initiative that this foundation has been fundraising all year. A hush dropped like a curtain. The chairwoman, Diane Ashford, stood up so fast her chair scraped. Trent’s champagne flute froze halfway to his mouth. I continued, steady. Tonight I was going to announce a fifteen million dollar matching pledge, and offer three executive fellowships to promising young finance professionals in this room. Trent straightened his tie, smiling like he’d already won. I looked directly at him. Unfortunately, one of your junior associates just referred to a decorated veteran as a charity case, and mocked my chair in front of my sister. So Mr. Ashford, the fellowship that was earmarked for Trent Bellamy is withdrawn. Effective immediately. Trent’s face went the color of old paper. Diane’s husband stepped forward, jaw tight. Trent, collect your coat. We’ll discuss your position Monday. Jenna was crying now, but her shoulders were back. I rolled to her, took her hand, and said quietly, You don’t need him to be somebody, kid. You already are. The whole ballroom rose to their feet, one slow clap at a time, until the applause sounded like rain on a tin roof. Trent walked out alone. I stayed exactly where I was, seated, and taller than any man in that room.
