“Actually,” I said, “I’d love to introduce tonight’s menu.” Damien snorted into his wine. “Honey, the staff doesn’t talk to guests. Go find the actual chef.” The room went quiet. Behind me, the kitchen doors swung open and my sous chef, Marco, walked out carrying the first course. He stopped beside me, bowed slightly, and said, “Chef Vance, the lamb is resting. Did you want to plate the amuse yourself, or shall I?” Damien’s wine glass paused halfway to his mouth. I turned to the table. “Welcome to Maren & Oak. I’m Eliza Vance, executive chef and co-owner. I designed tonight’s menu personally as a gift to my sister.” Lara’s hand flew to her mouth. Damien’s face went the color of the beet carpaccio. “You’re — you said you were a nurse —” “I said I worked nights and saved lives. I never corrected you because you never asked.” I set a small plate in front of him: a single perfect scallop, seared gold. “Hospital cafeteria food,” I said gently. “Enjoy.” He tried to laugh it off, but his date — a woman I’d never met — leaned over and whispered something sharp in his ear, then stood up and walked out. Lara finally looked at me, tears spilling. “Why didn’t you tell me?” “Because I wanted to know if he’d marry you for you,” I said, “or for the family he thought you came from.” She didn’t marry him. She moved into the apartment above my restaurant three weeks later and started waitressing weekends while she finished her degree. Damien sent one email asking if the offer of a “comped tasting” still stood. I forwarded it to my spam folder, right next to the turkey jokes he used to send every November. Some plates, you only serve once.
