I didn’t move toward the coffee cart. I walked, slow and deliberate, to the empty seat at the head of the table. Marcus laughed — actually laughed — and gestured at the Halverson executives like I was a punchline. ‘Sorry, gentlemen, my sister-in-law gets confused about which chairs are hers. Honey, the assistant pool is down the hall.’ I set my briefcase down. Clicked it open. Slid a leather portfolio across the polished glass toward the silver-haired man at the opposite end — Richard Halverson himself. ‘Mr. Halverson,’ I said softly, ‘I believe we have a seven-thirty. I apologize for the delay — I was told the room was still being prepped.’ Richard’s eyebrows lifted. Then he smiled, stood, and extended his hand across the table. ‘Ms. Whitaker. We were beginning to worry. The board has been very eager to meet the Managing Director who restructured the Pacific portfolio.’ The room went silent. Marcus’s bourbon glass froze halfway to his lips. Daniel — sweet, oblivious Daniel — finally understood why I’d never explained what I did for a living beyond ‘finance.’ I opened the portfolio. ‘Gentlemen, before we discuss the Whitaker Construction acquisition, I need to disclose a conflict of interest. The target company is owned by my husband’s family.’ Marcus’s face drained of color. ‘However,’ I continued, sliding a second document toward him, ‘after reviewing the books your brother-in-law submitted, Halverson Capital will be withdrawing the offer. The numbers were… creative.’ Marcus shot up. ‘You can’t — Daniel, control your wife!’ Daniel didn’t even look at him. He looked at me, eyes shining, and said quietly, ‘Baby. I’m so proud of you.’ I closed the portfolio. ‘One more thing, Marcus. The coffee cart? It’s down the hall. Pour yourself a cup. You’re going to need it when the forensic auditors call tomorrow morning.’ I walked out of that boardroom with my husband’s hand in mine — and Marcus’s empire crumbling behind us, one creative line item at a time.
