Sign the papers, sweetie. The house, the cars, the company—it’s all going to me

Marcus laughed. “Page nine? Honey, I had three lawyers draft this. Just sign.” Brittany giggled and leaned into his shoulder. I slid the contract back toward him, open to page nine, and tapped a single highlighted line. “Read it out loud,” I said. “For Brittany. She should know what she’s inheriting.”

His eyes scanned the paragraph. The color drained from his face like someone had pulled a plug. “This… this isn’t the version I gave you.”

“No,” I said. “It’s the version my attorney swapped in this morning, after your assistant accidentally CC’d me on your Cabo itinerary. Funny thing, Marcus—you never read the original prenup either. The house is in my mother’s trust. The cars are leased under my consulting LLC. And the company?” I pulled out my phone and turned the screen toward him. “I bought back the controlling shares from your father eighteen months ago, when he needed liquidity for his medical bills. He asked me to keep it quiet. He said you’d ‘spend it on something stupid.’ Turns out, he meant Brittany.”

Brittany’s smile collapsed. “Marcus, what is she talking about?”

“As of 9 a.m.,” I continued, “you no longer work at Hale Industries. Security already cleared your office. Your corporate card is frozen. The Mercedes in the driveway is being repossessed tonight—it was a company vehicle.” I slid one more page across. “This is what I need you to sign. It’s a voluntary resignation and a non-disclosure. Sign it, and I won’t pursue the embezzlement charges for the ‘consulting fees’ you funneled to Brittany’s shell account.”

He stared at me like he’d never seen me before. Maybe he hadn’t.

I untied my apron and folded it neatly on the counter. “Our daughter is upstairs. She turns eight tomorrow. You will smile at her party, you will leave quietly Sunday night, and you will never bring that woman near my child.” I picked up the pen again and held it out to him. “Sign, sweetie. You were just the placeholder husband.”

Brittany was already walking out the door. Marcus’s hand finally shook as he signed.
