Sign the house over to your brother, Mom, or don’t bother calling yourself family

“Vanessa,” I said softly, “do you remember the lawyer who came to the house in September?” Her smirk twitched. She didn’t. Of course she didn’t, she’d been in Cabo posting bikini photos while I was getting a port installed in my chest. “His name is Howard Mensch. He drove out because I asked him to. We spent four hours at this very table.” Brent set his beer down. Daniel finally looked up. “I transferred the lake house to Daniel in September. Outright. Deed recorded, taxes reassigned, everything clean.” Vanessa’s face went the color of the cranberry sauce. “You what?” “I also updated my will,” I continued. “The Charleston property, the brokerage accounts, your grandmother’s jewelry, all of it goes to Daniel. You’re not disinherited, sweetheart. You’re getting exactly what you’ve earned from me in the last decade.” I slid an envelope across the table. She tore it open. Inside was a single check for one dollar and a handwritten note: For the daughter who only calls when she needs something. Brent stood up so fast his chair tipped. “Eleanor, that’s insane, she’s your child, you can’t—” “I can, Brent. And I noticed you didn’t ask if I was okay when I mentioned chemo just now. Neither did she.” The room went so quiet I could hear the furnace click on. Vanessa started crying, the loud performative kind, gasping that I was cruel, that I was punishing her for being successful. Daniel reached over and squeezed my hand. “Mom, you didn’t have to—” “I know, baby. That’s why I did.” Vanessa grabbed her purse and stormed out. Brent followed, muttering about lawyers. I let them go. I picked up my fork. The turkey was getting cold. “Daniel,” I said, “pass me the gravy.” He did, with the smallest, steadiest smile I’d seen on him in years. Three months later, Vanessa sent a long apology email. I read it twice. Then I forwarded it to Howard and went back to teaching my grandson how to fish off the dock Daniel had rebuilt with his own hands.
