The elevator doors hadn’t even closed before my phone buzzed. It was Diane — the Diane — CEO of Kestrel Athletics, our “biggest account,” the one Marcus had been parading around like his personal trophy. “Elena, sweetheart, are you in the building? We’re pulling up now.” I smiled for the first time in eighteen hours. See, at 6 a.m., while rocking Mia in the ER waiting room, I’d taken Diane’s call. She’d wanted to know why the Q3 creative deck had her late husband’s charity misspelled — three times. Marcus had “personally overseen” that deck. I’d flagged it twice. He’d told me to “stay in my lane.” So I told Diane the truth. Quietly. Professionally. With receipts. I rode the elevator back up. Marcus was mid-laugh, leaning on my empty desk, telling the interns how “emotional women” couldn’t hack enterprise clients. Then the glass doors opened. Diane walked in with her CFO and two board members. The floor went silent. “Marcus,” she said, not even looking at him, “I’m here for Elena.” He blinked. “She — she just resigned, actually —” “No,” I said, setting the box down on his desk this time. “I was fired. By you. In front of fourteen witnesses. Eight minutes ago.” Diane turned to our CEO, who’d just hurried out of his office. “Bill, Kestrel is moving the full account — twenty-two million annually — under Elena’s direct lead. She’ll be building her own team. If she stays with Hawthorne, wonderful. If not, we go with her.” Bill’s eyes flicked to Marcus, then to me. “Elena. Please. Name your terms.” I picked up the cardboard box, walked it three steps, and placed it gently in Marcus’s arms. “Try Target,” I said softly. “I hear they’re hiring people who can’t keep it together.” Diane’s CFO actually laughed. Mia’s fever broke that night. My promotion was announced the next morning. Marcus’s cubicle was empty by Friday.
