Bruce was still laughing when the revolving door spun and three people in dark coats walked in fast, followed by a woman in a navy blazer with a city seal pinned to the lapel. The lobby went dead quiet. Mayor Elena Ruiz stopped six feet from Bruce, looked at the shredded lease on the floor, then at me, and her face did something I’ll never forget. “Ma’am, are you alright?” she asked me, and Bruce’s mouth opened like a fish. “Ma’am?” he echoed, trying to laugh. “She’s a TENANT, Mayor, she’s nobody —” The mayor didn’t even look at him. She turned to the man on her left, a tall guy with a folder, and said, “This is the property. And this,” nodding at me, “is Dr. Adaeze Okonkwo, the housing commissioner I told you about. She’s been living here undercover for six months for the discrimination audit.” Bruce’s face drained so fast his lips went white. I finally spoke, quiet, because I don’t have to be loud. “Mr. Halvorsen, every fine, every shut-off, every note under my door — I documented all of it. The building’s ownership group has been under federal review since April. My report drops Monday.” He tried, God help him, he tried. “I — I was joking, it was a misunderstanding, Dr. Okon— Ok—” “Okonkwo,” the mayor said flatly. Two of the dark-coat men were already unrolling a notice and taping it to the concierge desk: EMERGENCY RECEIVERSHIP — CITY OF CHICAGO. The doorman who wouldn’t look at me an hour ago suddenly picked up my other orange and handed it back with both hands, whispering, “I’m so sorry, Doctor.” Bruce sat down on the marble floor, right in the pile of shredded lease, and put his head between his knees. I stepped over him and pressed the elevator button for my floor for the last time. Behind me the mayor said, calm as Sunday, “Mr. Halvorsen, please remain where you are. Someone would like a word.”
