Hand over the bakery deed, Grandma, or we’re putting you in the cheapest nursing

“She signs today,” Aunt Marlene snapped, tapping the page. “The developer’s offer expires Monday. We’re doing her a favor, Tyler, before she burns the place down forgetting a timer.” Grandma flinched. That was the moment I stepped inside, snow falling off my boots onto her clean tile. “Hi, Aunt Marlene.” They both spun around. Tyler’s smirk faltered for half a second before he recovered. “Hannah. This doesn’t concern you. Go warm up somewhere.” “Actually,” I said, setting my bag on the counter, “it concerns me a lot. Because Grandma transferred the bakery into a family trust eighteen months ago. I’m the trustee.” The silence cracked like a dropped mixing bowl. Marlene’s face went the color of raw dough. “That’s — that’s not possible. She would have told us.” “She did tell you,” I said softly. “At Thanksgiving. You were on your phone arguing about a cruise refund.” I pulled out the trust documents I kept in a folder in my car for exactly this reason. “The deed isn’t hers to sign away anymore. And the developer you’ve been whispering to? He called me last week to confirm the seller. I told him the property isn’t for sale. Ever.” Tyler lunged for the papers on the counter — the fake ones he’d brought. I slid them out of reach and held up my phone. “Recording, by the way. Elder financial abuse is a felony in this state. I already have her doctor’s note saying she’s of completely sound mind, just tired.” Grandma straightened in her apron, and I watched twenty years lift off her shoulders. “Marlene,” she said, her voice suddenly steady, “take your son and get out of my kitchen. And don’t come back until you can knock like family instead of crawling in like rats.” Tyler opened his mouth. I tilted the phone toward him. He closed it. They left without their coats buttoned, slipping on the icy steps they’d grown up running down. Grandma reached for my hand, flour and all. “Cinnamon rolls?” she whispered. I smiled. “Two dozen. And then we’re calling the lawyer.”
