I opened the manila envelope slowly. Vivienne’s smile tightened. ‘What is that, dear? A sob story? A payment plan?’ I slid the first document across the table. It was the deed to the Ashcroft family’s flagship boutique hotel in Manhattan — the crown jewel of her late husband’s empire. The one she’d been quietly mortgaging for eighteen months to cover her failing real estate ventures. The one that, as of six weeks ago, had been purchased through a holding company called Marin Holdings LLC. Her face went the color of the bone china in front of her. ‘Where did you get this?’ she whispered. I slid the second document across. The incorporation papers for Marin Holdings. Sole owner and CEO: Claire Marin. Me. ‘I wasn’t a junior accountant, Vivienne. I founded a fintech firm at twenty-two. We went public last spring. I used my mother’s maiden name on the filings because Daniel asked me to keep it private — he said you’d respect me more if you thought I earned my way slowly.’ I looked at Daniel. He finally lifted his head, and there were tears in his eyes, but not surprise. He’d known. He’d been waiting for her to choose. ‘I bought the hotel because the staff there — including a housekeeper named Rosa Marin — were about to lose their pensions when you defaulted. That housekeeper is my mother. She cleaned your rooms for nineteen years while you called her ‘the help.’ She’s now the head of operations, with full benefits and equity.’ Vivienne’s hand trembled around her coffee cup. ‘Daniel — Daniel, tell her—’ ‘Tell her what, Mom?’ he said quietly. ‘That you spent three years humiliating the woman I love? She already knows.’ I closed the folder containing her prenup and slid it back across the marble. ‘I won’t be signing this. But you will be signing the lease renewal for the penthouse you’re currently living in. Marin Holdings owns that building too. Rent’s going up. Considerably.’ I stood, smoothed my secondhand blazer, and took Daniel’s hand. ‘Charity case is leaving your venue now, Vivienne. Do try to clean up after yourself.’
