I stood up slowly. Her husband, Gregory Hollister, was going into full cardiac arrest on the polished lobby floor, and Vivian was busy filming me on her phone to “report the janitor who touched him.” The triage nurses froze. Two residents I had personally trained last week took a step back, terrified of the Hollister name on the north tower. Nobody moved. Nobody except the man who came through the automatic doors at a dead run, white coat flaring behind him, six senior attendings trailing in formation. Dr. Marcus Chen, Chief of Surgery, thirty-year veteran, the man whose signature was on every operating privilege in this building. He didn’t look at Gregory. He didn’t look at Vivian. He stopped three feet from me, came to attention, and said, “Colonel. We have the OR prepped on your order from the ambulance call. What’s your read?” Vivian’s phone lowered about two inches. I flipped my badge around. Col. Dr. Elena Reyes, MD, FACS. Chief of Trauma Surgery. Former lead surgeon, 10th Combat Support Hospital, Kandahar. The woman she’d been snapping her fingers at was the only person in a fifty-mile radius who could save her husband’s life, and I had already been paged from the helipad four minutes before she opened her mouth. “Ma’am,” Marcus added, quieter, “the board is waiting on your call about her hospital privileges.” I looked at Vivian. Her mascara was starting to run and she hadn’t even cried yet. “Get him on the gurney,” I said to my team. Then, to her: “You can wait in the family room. The nobody will let you know how it goes.”
