The manager arrived, a tall woman with kind eyes named Patricia. Daniel waved her off impatiently. ‘We’re fine, we just need a notary witness for my mother.’ Patricia tilted her head and looked at me. ‘Linda? Are you alright?’ Daniel froze. He didn’t know that Patricia was my late husband’s goddaughter — the same girl I’d helped through nursing school when her parents couldn’t. The same girl who now co-owned three restaurants in the city, including this one. ‘Patricia, sweetheart,’ I said gently, ‘could you pull up the reservation under my name?’ She smiled. ‘Of course, Aunt Linda.’ Daniel’s face drained of color. Vanessa’s wine glass paused mid-air. I turned back to my son and slid the deed back across the table — along with a second envelope I’d been carrying in my purse for two weeks. ‘Open it,’ I said. Inside was a letter from your father’s attorney. The house was never in my name alone, Daniel. Your father put it in a trust — a trust I control until my death, with one named beneficiary. Not you. Your sister Megan. The one you stopped calling when she couldn’t lend you money for Vanessa’s ring. The one who’s been driving forty minutes every Sunday to mow my lawn. Vanessa stood up so fast her chair tipped. ‘Daniel, you told me—’ ‘Sit DOWN, Vanessa,’ I said, and for the first time in my life, my voice didn’t shake. I stood, smoothed my cardigan, and laid two crisp twenties on the table for my water. ‘Patricia, dear, the rest is on them. And please — they won’t be welcome back.’ As I walked out, I heard Daniel call my name, softer now, almost a child’s voice. I didn’t turn around. Some doors you close gently. Others you let slam behind you for the last time.
