I turned to leave, and that’s when the double doors at the back opened. Headmaster Chen walked in with three people in tailored suits behind him, and the entire room went quiet the way a room goes quiet when something important is about to happen. He scanned the crowd, spotted me, and his whole face changed. “Dr. Alvarez. You’re early.” Brenda’s smile flickered. “Dr. who?” Headmaster Chen walked straight past her like she wasn’t there and stopped in front of me. “I am so sorry. I asked you to come in coveralls for the surprise reveal, I didn’t think anyone would”— he glanced at Brenda— “misunderstand.” He turned to the microphone. “Parents, I’d like to formally introduce the anonymous donor who funded our new STEM wing, our scholarship program, and, as of this morning, the twelve full-ride tuition grants for children of school staff. Dr. Maria Alvarez. Structural engineer, single mother, and yes, she’s been working night maintenance shifts here for three months, undercover, to see how our staff and families are actually treated before signing the final endowment.” The room inhaled as one. Brenda’s face drained so fast I actually watched the color leave. “The endowment is contingent on a culture review,” the headmaster continued gently. “Dr. Alvarez has full authority to recommend which board members and PTA officers remain.” Brenda stepped forward, laughing too loud. “Maria, sweetie, I was joking, you know I was joking”— I finally found my voice. I knelt down, kissed the top of Eli’s head, and stood back up. “Brenda,” I said, calm as a closed door, “the service entrance is around back. You can collect your things there.” One of the suits behind the headmaster opened a leather folder. Brenda’s husband, three rows back, quietly stood up and walked out without her. Eli looked up at me and, for the first time all night, smiled.
