Ethan rolled his eyes. “Mom, don’t be dramatic. Dad’s been gone almost a year.” Brittany sighed like I was a slow child. “Margaret, the market’s peaking. We’re doing you a favor.” I slid my phone to the center of the table and pressed play. David’s voice filled the space between the clinking forks. ‘Maggie, if you’re hearing this, the lawyer did his job. I rewrote everything last Tuesday. The lake house, the brokerage, the Charleston rental, all of it goes into the trust in your name only. Ethan called me a burden last month when I asked for a ride to chemo. He doesn’t get a dime until he learns what family means. I love you. Lock the doors.’ The recording ended. A fork dropped two tables over. Ethan’s face went the color of the tablecloth. “That’s not, he didn’t, that’s not legal, he was on medication, we’ll contest, Mom, tell them it’s not real.” I took the deed transfer, tore it neatly in half, and tucked the pieces into Brittany’s purse like a tip. “Sweetheart,” I said, “the trust was finalized in March. I’ve known since April. I let you plan your cruise because I wanted to see who you really were before I made my decision.” I pulled out a second envelope, this one cream-colored, embossed. “This is from my attorney. You have thirty days to vacate the condo I’ve been paying the mortgage on. The Tahoe is leased in my name; please return the keys by Friday. And Brittany, the engagement ring, the one you’ve been telling everyone is a family heirloom? It belonged to David’s mother. It comes home with me today.” Brittany’s hand flew to her chest. Ethan started crying, actual tears, the kind he used to fake at seven to get cookies. I stood, left two crisp hundreds for the waitress who’d flinched, and walked out into the sunlight. The lake house was three hours north. David’s old fishing rod was still by the back door. I had a sunset to catch, and for the first time in eight months, my hands weren’t shaking at all.
