I didn’t raise my voice. I’ve learned that the quietest person in the room is usually the one holding the match. I wiped my hands on my apron and walked past Ashley to the little framed photo above the espresso machine — me and her father Hector, 2003, standing in front of the food truck that started it all. “Ashley,” I said gently, “your father and I divorced in 2011. He hasn’t owned a single share of this restaurant in fourteen years.” Her smile flickered. Marcus stepped forward, tapping his folder. “We have the original 2004 partnership agreement, Elena. Fifty-fifty. It was never dissolved on paper.” I nodded slowly. “That’s true. The partnership was never dissolved on paper.” Ashley’s smile came back, sharper. “So we’re done here.” “Except,” I said, reaching under the hostess stand for the accordion file I’ve kept there for nineteen years, “in 2006, your father took out a two-hundred-thousand-dollar loan against his half of the business to cover his gambling debts. I co-signed. When he defaulted in 2009, the bank foreclosed on his stake. I bought it back at auction for forty-one thousand dollars. Cash. Here’s the deed. Here’s the bank’s release. Here’s the county filing.” I slid the papers across the hostess stand. Marcus’s face went the color of raw dough. He read the top page. Then the second. Then he closed the folder very, very slowly. “Ashley,” he said quietly, “we need to leave.” But I wasn’t finished. “The reason I never told you, mija, is because your father asked me not to. He didn’t want you to know he’d gambled away your college fund. I paid for Georgetown myself. Every semester. Out of this restaurant. The one you just tried to steal.” Ashley opened her mouth. Nothing came out. Miguel started clapping from the kitchen. Then table four. Then the whole dining room. Ashley walked out without her purse. Marcus came back twenty minutes later to get it, wouldn’t meet my eyes, and left a hundred-dollar tip on a coffee he never drank. I flipped the sign to OPEN and called out, “Who’s still hungry?”
