She threw hot coffee on me and laughed. She didn’t know who was watching

What Marissa didn’t notice was the quiet man in booth six. Gray sweater, black coffee, no phone. He’d been coming in every Tuesday for a month, always tipping forty on a four dollar drip. I only knew his first name, Daniel. He set his mug down, walked over, and crouched next to me on the wet tile. “You okay?” he asked, helping me lift a shard. Marissa snorted. “Great, the busboy found a boyfriend.” Daniel stood up slowly. “Miss Vance, right? Marissa Vance, senior brand director at Halden Cosmetics?” Her smile froze. “Do I know you?” He pulled a badge from his back pocket. “Daniel Corr. I’m the incoming CEO. The board asked me to spend six weeks visiting the small businesses our foundation sponsors, unannounced, to see how our people treat strangers. This cafe is on our list. You are on our payroll.” The color drained out of her face in real time. Her friends suddenly found their phones fascinating. Daniel turned to Rick. “Your employee was assaulted on camera. You watched. You’ll be hearing from HR by Monday.” Then he turned back to me. “Elena, correct? I saw your name tag last week. I also saw you cover a stranger’s bill when his card declined. That’s the kind of person we build teams around.” He handed me a business card. “Call my assistant tomorrow. We have a customer care lead role opening in the Halden flagship. Salary, benefits, tuition reimbursement.” Marissa tried to laugh it off. “This is a misunderstanding, I was joking with her.” Daniel didn’t even look at her. “HR will call you too. Please stay seated until they do.” He walked back to booth six, sat down, and calmly finished his coffee. My hands were still shaking, but for the first time in a year, not from fear.
