Sweetheart, you’re the housekeeper here, not the heiress — so smile, refill the champagne

Mr. Castellanos cleared his throat. “Before the toasts, Mr. Beaumont has asked me to share an announcement.” Vivian beamed, assuming this was the moment she’d been promised — the transfer of the estate into her name. She actually rose from her chair and blew Dad a kiss. Dad, frail in his wheelchair beside the fireplace, lifted one trembling finger and pointed it directly at me.

“Six months ago,” Castellanos read, “Mr. Beaumont executed a revised trust. Effective tonight, full ownership of the Beaumont estate, the Hartford holdings, and the controlling shares of Beaumont Orchards transfers to his daughter, Hannah Beaumont, in recognition of her documented stewardship and care.” The room went silent. Someone dropped a fork. Vivian’s champagne flute slipped from her fingers and shattered.

“There must be a mistake,” she laughed, voice cracking. “I’m his wife —” “You signed a prenup in 2009, Mrs. Beaumont,” Castellanos said gently. “It remains in force. Additionally, Mr. Beaumont has filed for legal separation, citing the audit our firm completed last month.” He slid a folder across the podium. “Three hundred and twelve thousand dollars in unauthorized withdrawals from the household account, traced to your personal cards in Monaco and Saint-Tropez. The estate will be pursuing restitution.”

Vivian’s hand flew to the emerald necklace at her throat. “Also,” Castellanos added, almost apologetically, “that necklace is listed in the estate inventory as the property of the late Mrs. Eleanor Beaumont, willed directly to Hannah. We’d appreciate its return this evening.”

I walked over slowly, set the empty flute on the table beside her, and held out my open palm. Her fingers shook as she unclasped it. Behind me, Dad whispered, loud enough for the microphone to catch, “That’s my girl.” I fastened my mother’s emeralds around my own neck, turned to the forty stunned guests, and lifted a fresh glass. “To my father,” I said. “And to knowing exactly whose place is whose.”
